Tess Girard is a Prince Edward County-based filmmaker and cinematographer. Girard’s work lies somewhere between documentary and experimental, exploring subject matter from a philosophical perspective with techniques that challenge audiences to engage in the work on a highly personal level.
Her recent films include Old Growth (TIFF 2012, Canada’s Top Ten 2012), A Simple Rhythm (Hot Docs 2011) and Benediction (TIFF 2005, Best Production at FFM 2005, Best Cinematography WSFF 2006).
Girard has collaborated with many renowned artists, including Peter Mettler (Gambling, Gods and LSD), Ryan J Noth (National Parks Project), Andrea Nann (Dreamwalker Dance), Charles Spearin and other members of Do Make Say Think, and with the Art of Time Ensemble on the productions of The War of the Worlds and Russia in Exile. Recently Girard was co-director of The Historica-Dominion Institute’s relaunch of Canada’s Heritage Minutes and created the radio documentary The Heart of The Beat for CBC’s IDEAS. Girard is currently in production of her latest feature documentary As The Crow Flies with the National Film Board of Canada.
